Artists Chosen to Create 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance® and Tour d'Elegance Posters

Charles Maher will design 58th annual Concours poster; Barry Rowe will create the 11th annual Tour poster.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Apr. 1, 2008) – Posters have been created to commemorate the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance since the event’s inception in 1950. As the Concours has matured into an international automotive spectacle, these posters have evolved from simple promotional tools into prized works of art. Continuing the tradition, artist Charles Maher has been commissioned to illustrate the 58th annual event, to be held Sunday, August 17, on the legendary 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links.

“Being asked to design an event poster is always an honor, but I don’t think anything ranks with Pebble Beach. I was in shock when I heard I was selected,” said Maher, a former Ford Motor Company designer whose paintings have appeared in Road & Track, Automobile and AutoWeek magazines. Maher’s creation will feature the 1954 Oldsmobile F88, one of the dream cars unveiled at the General Motors Motorama, a futuristic auto extravaganza that traveled the country almost annually from 1953 to 1961. A select group of Motorama cars will be on hand at the 2008 Concours as part of its salute to GM’s 100th anniversary. “The car has a lot of mechanical detail and will be featured in a different setting than people have seen in the past.”

Posters are also created each year for the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex, the 60-mile scenic drive for Concours entrants along 17-Mile Drive, Highway 1 and into Carmel. This year’s Tour d’Elegance poster will highlight one of Lancia’s most innovative cars, the D24. Lancia will be one of this year’s featured marques at the Concours and Tour. Barry Rowe, a renowned automotive artist who has already designed three Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance posters and seven Tour d’Elegance posters, will paint the 11th annual Tour poster.

“Automobiles, along with the periods they represent, have captivated me since I was a child, so it’s an incredible pleasure and honor to be part of the greatest car show in the world,” said Rowe, who has won several awards of excellence at Concours around the world and created artwork for Louis Vuitton of Paris and Royal Caribbean cruise ships. “I’ve been extremely fortunate to create a Pebble Beach poster every year since becoming a member of the AFAS (Automotive Fine Arts Society) in 1997. It’s like I’ve become a part of the Pebble Beach family.”

Rowe and Maher will be among the select group of artists to display their latest creations at the AFAS Exhibition on the Concours show field.
